PowerVu Data Recorder

The PowerVu data acquisition system is a multi-channel device designed specifically for measuring the response of utility generators and other three-phase power system devices during staged tests or under ambient operating conditions. In its standard configuration, the system measures three-phase voltages and currents (six channels) and up to ten other quantities using a combination of isolated and non-isolated inputs. Calculations are performed on the ac input channels to determine quantities such as RMS voltage amplitude, reactive power, sequence components and frequency. These calculations replace the conventional hardware transducers that would have formed part of previous power system data acquisition systems.

The PowerVu includes a fully isolated multi-channel test output facility that allows the generation of a variety of output signals for time-domain and frequency-domain testing of generators, excitation systems, power system stabilizers and governors.

The PowerVu is configured and controlled through any laptop computer running the Client software. The Client computer communicates with the Server over a network or through a direct Ethernet connection. The Client software allows the user to configure and control the Server, display data being calculated in real-time and capture data records. The PowerVu Client provides advanced tools for visualizing test results in real time and archiving them for future reporting.

ISOCH Frequency Recorder

The ISOCH (derived from the term isochronous, the constant frequency mode of governing) frequency recorder is a microprocessor-based data acquisition system that has been designed specifically to perform un-attended measurement of power system frequency and governor quantities. The ISOCH continuously monitors the input frequency and initiates a recording based on various triggers. It has been designed for high resolution and accuracy and uses various trigger algorithms to automatically identify events that will be of interest to power system planners, operations specialists and station maintenance staff.

Unlike other standalone frequency recorders, the ISOCH is capable of measuring four other analog quantities allowing the system to be used as a rugged, highly portable recorder for governor system tests and troubleshooting. It is also capable of generating an analog output signal proportional to frequency for use with other recording equipment or metering.

Configuration options include a GPS synchronization option, a single-phase power measurement option and an isolated two-channel input card complete with external offset and gain adjustments to maximize measurement resolution.

Transducers

Kestrel has designed a number of analog transducers and isolators for use in monitoring generator terminal quantities safely. For further information on these products contact Broy

3 Phase Terminal Voltage Transducer

Produces three outputs based on a set of balanced three-phase voltage inputs:

  1. adjustable dc voltage (nominal 10V dc for 120% rated input) proportional to the ac voltage amplitude
  2. pulse train (5V) synchronized to the ac voltage crossings
  3. adjustable dc voltage proportional to the input frequency

The amplitude output has an adjustable gain and a low time constant (10 ms) for use in recording terminal voltage transients during testing or for ambient monitoring purposes. Nominal input is three-phase 115 Vac RMS.

DC Isolators

A series of isolators designed for connection to the field windings or excitation system outputs of utility-scale generators. These isolators provide high-voltage isolation for safety, high common-mode rejection for measurement accuracy and adjustable filters to provide clean outputs while still maintaining high bandwidth for measurement purposes. Versions are available for use as portable test equipment and for permanent installation. Common specifications for each of these units include:

  • Output voltage 10 V
  • isolation 2500 Vrms
  • selectable notch filter frequencies: 120, 150, 180, 300, 360, 500 Hz
  • time constant: 20 ms (maximum)
  • LM-ISO203I in tended for connection to shunts
  • Input range (user-adjustable): 50 mV - 5V
  • LM-ISO203V in tended for connection across exciter outputs
  • Input range (user adjustable) up to 2000V
